The Best of Broadway

8th Grade, 9th Grade, 10th Grade, 11th Grade, 12th Grade

Mondays 7:00-9:00pm

8th - 12th Grade

Join us on a trip to Broadway, where students will learn, perfect, and create some of the most popular Broadway music from yesterday to today! Students will get the opportunity to sing solos, duets, and other ensembles from Broadway favorites in a fully staged and costumed production. A script will be created to tie all of the numbers together. Back by popular demand, material is picked specifically for the students enrolled. Students should be prepared to do a lot of singing and acting! This class is not recommended for students who will miss a lot of rehearsals. Conflicts will be collected in the beginning of the class and then a rehearsal schedule will be made for all of the extra small group rehearsals. Since no one has an “off-night” or double cast attendance is very important. Take a trip to Broadway under direction of Joe Santaniello a Boston Conservatory graduate who has directed nearly 40 productions and is a professional actor and singer himself. Come one, come all!

    Thursday Classes

    Cleopatra

9th Grade, 10th Grade, 11th Grade, 12th Grade, College and Adult

    Thursdays 6:45pm - 9:00pm

    9th - 12th Grade

Be a part of this exciting and challenging award-winning rock musical by Cheryl E. Kemeny, which was developed at the MidTown International Festival in NYC as well as at the Planet Connections Theatre Festivities in 2009. This huge splashy production has many parts, allowing you to bring out your inner ancient Roman or Egyptian.

Born into a country rife with intrigue and suspicion, Cleopatra quickly loses the bloom of youthful ignorance, learning the importance of duty and the mantra of the ruling class to "kill or be killed." Ascending to the throne upon the death of her weak-willed father, her attempts to rule are undermined by her ambitious younger brother, whose efforts only succeed in plunging the country into a civil war. Enter Julius Caesar.

Although many in Egypt want to fight the Romans, Cleopatra realizes the futility of such an action. Rather she wants Egypt to become part of the Roman Empire, enjoying its protection, while remaining a power in its own right. This requires her to form an alliance with Julius Caesar--an alliance which is not well received back in Rome, (a fact which leads to Caesar’s final downfall). At the birth of her son (Caesarion), Cleopatra seizes the advantage of being the mother of Caesar’s only living offspring and heads for Rome. Soon after, Cleopatra sees her protector cruelly assassinated, but, later finds new opportunities (and love) in the arms of Marc Antony and new enemies-Octavian, Caesar’s proclaimed heir and successor and Fulvia, Marc Antony’s wife and Octavia, Marc’s 2nd wife and sister to Octavian.

Whether thought of as a beloved Queen or disparagingly referred to as "that woman", through it all, Cleopatra wants only one thing - a strong Egypt. But while she makes great strides to that end, she cannot win over her detractors, always having to deal with gossip, second-guessing and predictions of doom which foreshadow her final downfall and descent into legend.

Directed by Samantha Kulish, musical direction by Cheryl E Kemeny, choreography by Char Fromentin. Assisted by Greg Kisken & Debra Poruban.

    Musicianship Skills

    8th Grade, 9th Grade, 10th Grade, 11th Grade, 12th Grade

    Sundays 7:30pm - 9:00pm

    8th - 12th Grade

Are you tired of being lost in music classes because you can’t read music very well or at all? Do you find yourself taking a longer time to learn songs than your friends who play an instrument? Is it hard for you to sing harmonies? Do you need to get better at sight-reading? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this class is for you! Don’t be stereotyped as the “dumb singer” any longer! Complete beginners to intermediate musicians are welcome. Instrumentalists learn how to read music as soon as they begin to learn an instrument, while singers often learn by ear and recordings. Then as singers get older and get into more advanced productions they are expected to read music and sight-read fluently without ever learning the skill. Never fear, this class is for you! Learn intervals, rhythms, conducting patterns, pitch identification, and solfège to up your game. Many theatre companies require singers to sight-read or to sing a song they have never seen before at callbacks. No matter how good you are at singing does not matter if you don’t have this skill. If you are planning on going to college for musical theatre, opera, or music education and need more practice at these skills, this class is highly recommended! This course is short, affordable, and teaches an absolutely needed skill in this field. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by! Class is taught by Boston Conservatory graduate, voice teacher, and long time Crystal Theatre instructor and alumni Joe Santaniello. All class materials are included in cost.
