Matthew Surapine

Voice Teacher & Musical Director

Matthew Surapine, tenor, is actively sought for his crystal-clear voice and lively stage portrayals. Career highlights include his tenure with the Metropolitan Opera as a principal singer, for 8 seasons. Mr. Surapine has been a welcome cast member at the New York City Opera, where his performances at Lincoln Center as well as with the National Company, were among his favorite experiences. He has performed with the major regional opera companies, such as St. Louis Opera Theater, Kansas City Lyric Opera, El Paso Opera, Central City Opera, Chautauqua Institute, and Grand Rapids. He has worked with many of the world's finest conductors, including James Levine, Valery Gergiev, and George Manahan as well as performing with luminaries such as Placido Domingo, James Earl Jones, Paul Sorvino, and Rebecca Luker. Mr. Surapine is the Director of Music at St. Aedan R.C.Church in Pearl River NY, where his annual concerts have become a high-light of the church. Mr. Surapine has been the Music Director of the Norwalk Quartette Club Singers, the oldest established singing group in CT, for the last 7 years. Mr. Surapine is co-founder and board member of the Grace Charitable Foundation, a 501.c.3 charity, which produces fund raising concerts to assist needy families in the Lower Hudson Valley. Mr. Surapine maintains his private voice studio in Norwalk CT., where he cultivates the next generation of singers. His students have been accepted into elite institution such as Manhattan School of Music, Oberlin Conservatory as well as Jacobs School of Music. Other students chose a different route, one performing as the Genie in Broadway's "Aladdin", another at Seagle Music Festival, pursuing his opera career, and another is an internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist, based in Montreal. Mr. Surapine is thrilled to be joining the teaching staff of Crystal Theatre, where he has graced the stage with his portrayals of Aldo Salvotore in "Whistleville, South Norwalk- 1907, Caesar in "Cleopatra", Thomas French in the original production of "The Burning of Norwalk, 1779", and most recently Virgil in this past November's production of "Louder than Words". He looks forward to more as he works with the next generation of Crystal Theatre stars. Mr. Surapine's three daughters are Crystal Theatre alumni themselves, and Mr. Surapine lives with his wife in Norwalk, Connecticut.
